Hervey Bay car rental is not as varied as bigger regions or cities, but there is still plenty to offer the discerning traveller. The Fraser Coast Airport hosts several national operators, Avis, Budget, Europcar and Thrifty with Hertz based nearby in Urangan.

A number of local operators are based in Hervey Bay, Scarness and Torquay - all offering a variety of vehicle rentals from small cars to large sedans, and 4WDs.

Because of the proximity to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world, $WD hire is a thriving business in Hervey Bay with Safari 4x4, Fraser Magic 4WD and Bay 4WD all offering large vehicles - often Landrovers or Landcruisers - to allow access to the island, a sort ferry journey away.

One company even offers Hummers for hire.

Fraser Island has strict rules for drivers and all drivers have to obtain a National Parks permit before arriving on the island. These can be purchased ($40 per vehicle) from the operators.

Ferry fees range from $90 to $150, dependent on departure point and the number of passengers.

On the mainland all key roads are easily accessible by car and prices are competitive with daily and weekly rates, all with full insurance cover.

Be sure to have a valid drivers’ licence, be over 21, and a credit card to pay for or validate your booking. And remember, it’s advisable that any special requests like children’s safety seats be booked in advance wherever possible. Check if it includes roadside breakdown assistance.

Wicked Campers also have a base in Hervey Bay with great deals and no frills camping.
